Webmaster: Gill Clough (Euphonium player)

I created the Trinity Concert Band's first web site in February 2004. I joined in 2003 and was surprised to discover that they did not have a web presence. It was a journey of discovery both for the committee members, many of whom had little experience of the internet, and for me. I had played around with HTML for a few years, creating odd (and I mean really odd) websites for myself to make photographs and other information available to friends and family. It was an interesting challenge to create a website with a clearly defined goal.

I had never purchased a domain name or webspace before so that was interesting. It wasn't as difficult or complicated as you might think and with the webspace came a number of useful tools such as the guestbook, the discussion board and the useful Search script to allow people to search the Trinity Concert Band website for keywords.

The first version of the website fulfilled the criteria I had been given. It displayed the band colours of red and green and provided contact information (both email and telephone) and some background details about how the band had been formed, the sort of music it played and a detailed concert programmed. I was delighted (and still am) to see that we get hits from as far afield as Australia, Greece, Italy and the U.S.

I then took a short Open University course on Web Applications design called TT280. Here I learned about Web Standards and the W3C web consortium. To my horror I realised that I had paid no attention to things like "ease of updating", "accessibility", "maintainibility" and other such "...abilities".

I have today (8th September 2004) just finished a complete rewrite of the website. I have used CSS1 style sheets, templates and coded it in HTML 4.0 transitional. What this should mean is that these pages are accessible to a variety of different browsers running on different operating systems. They should be easily viewable to people with disabilities, or simply those who prefer to view a large font instead of the default size. I have probably not achieved this goal 100% so please email me with any problems you encounter and I will do my best to fix them.

Enjoy the site

Gill
