Trinity Band In the News

March 2008 Press release for Workshop at the Trinity Church

Local Band Host Musical Workshop

New members and music lovers invited to rehearsal

It's an opportunity to stop, look and listen for prospective musicians and music lovers in general as Trinity Concert Band hold an open day workshop at Trinity Church , Lower Earley on March 1 st . The band will be working through some new material across the day, led by Musical Director Peter Cole and two exciting guest conductors, with visitors able to drop in at any point across the day for a rare insight into how a 50-strong band put together new pieces, and then rehearse and refine them before a final performance in the early evening.

"I am very excited about this workshop," says band chairman and principal oboist Lucy Jurd. "It will give the members of the band a taste of playing some technically demanding pieces, and we would love to have anyone interested in joining the band come along and listen. P laying all day long will be great for building up stamina and also learning about different aspects of musicianship. It will also be interesting to work with our guest conductors and experience their different styles of conducting and leading the band. It should be a really fun day...but hard work!"

The church is the band's regular rehearsal venue and prospective new members are always welcome. The band is currently seeking to develop its lower brass section but would also welcome saxophones, oboes and a stringed bass/bass guitar player.  Musicians of grade five or equivalent standard are invited to contact Musical Director Peter Cole to find out more - e-mail colehole @ btinternet.com .

One of the guest conductors is Peter's brother David, a former Director of Music for the Royal Marines Band Service, and the last Director of Music on Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia. Currently Musical Director for the Royal British Legion, David will be leading the band in own composition "Kaleidoscope"- a medley of the popular tunes "Black is Black", "Lady in Red", A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk".   Also on baton-duties will be Peter Ripper, whose wide-ranging musical experience includes the Scots Guards, the BBC Radio Big Band and the London Symphony Orchestra. Peter will be bringing a selection of 'big band' music to train the band in this, very different, style of playing.

"I'm really looking forward to a full day with the Trinity Band and these two outstanding professional conductors," says Peter. "I know we're all going to have a great day.  Anyone who's interested in seeing a band being put through its paces should really pop in and listen."

This busy day for the band starts at 10am, and will climax in a final performance scheduled for 5.15pm, anticipated to last 45-minutes
