A Night at the Oscars

October 24th, 2017

October 21st saw the band return to the beautiful Great Hall at Reading University for their concert entitled ‘A Night at the Oscars’, and what a night it was! The size of this venue really allows the impressive sound that the band can produce to shine, and musicians of all levels will tell you how wonderful it is to perform a programme full of music from stage and screen.

The band got things off to a flying start with ‘Soaring with John Williams’, featuring music from Superman and Empire of the Sun, and then continued through the first half of the concert with music from West Side Story, Chariots of Fire and Lawrence of Arabia to name but a few. The sax quartet delighted the audience with performances of ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ (Toy Story) and ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’ (The Mission).

After a short interval for refreshments, a rousing rendition of ‘Agincourt Song’ (Henry V) from the brass section announced the start of the second half. The band ‘marched’ swiftly on with the ‘River Kwai March’ before giving an emotional performance of ‘Hymn to the Fallen’ (Saving Private Ryan). The audience were transported on a galactic journey with the superb arrangement of ‘Star Wars Saga’ before the audience were finally treated to an encore of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.
